ADVERSE REACTIONS • In humans there have been reports of a transient rise in intra-ocular pressure following
the administration of sodium hyaluronate into the eye. There have also been occasional
                                         reports of hypersensitivity (Martindale, 1996).

                                       • Crystalline deposits on intra-ocular lenses have been reported in human patients following
the use of a high viscosity sodium hyaluronate preparation during cataract surgery
                                         (Martindale, 1996).

                                       • Hyaluronic acid injection related side effects are more common, consisting of erythema,
swelling, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the implant site. Resolution is
spontaneous within one or two days. Hyaluronic acid substance related adverse effects are
rare, less than 1 in 2,000 treatments (Vedamurthy, 2004).

the joint (Vedamurthy, 2004; Alam & Pongprutthipan, 2010).
                                       • Contraindicated in autoimmune disease (Alam & Pongprutthipan, 2010).
                                       • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid
                                          (Alam & Pongprutthipan, 2010).
