                               Piper futokadsura (Kadzura Pepper)

Caulis Piperis Kadsurae is widely used in Chinese herbal medicinal prescriptions for the treatment
of asthma and arthritic conditions (Lin et al., 2006). The neolignans, piperkadsin A, B, C and
futoquinol, isolated from Caulis Piperis Kadsurae exhibits anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting
nitric oxide production. The anti-inflammatory activities of these compounds are also attributed
to their potent free radical scavenging activity (Lin et al., 2006; Kim et al., 2010). Piperlactam S,
an alkaloid isolated from Caulis Piperis Kadsurae prevented LDL peroxidation and ameliorated
free radical-induced oxidative stress on endothelial cells (Tsai et al., 2003). Kadsuketanone A has
been shown to inhibit the inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide and prostaglandin E (Kim
                                                                                                           2
                               et al., 2011).
